Welcome to the Columbia College
 
CLIMB Professional Mentor Program

What is the mentoring program at Columbia College?  

Columbia College has had a formal mentoring program that pairs its Women’s College students with Midlands area professional women for many years. In 2013, the college made this program (CLIMB) an integral part of each student’s experience. Mentors make up the third part of our student’s “Personal Board of Directors”, sharing the goals of academic and professional success with their faculty advisor and career coach. Since its inception, the program has matched students with more than 400 professional women from over 225 companies in the community.

The Columbia College mentor program is designed to aid our young women in fostering professional and meaningful connections. Young women flourish when they have access to outside perspectives that come with their best interests in mind. We believe one of the lessons of experience and wisdom is to pass it on… and this mentoring program is all about paying it forward to the next generation of young women leaders. The commitment is light, but the benefits are endless as mentoring is a rewarding professional and personal opportunity.  CLIMB offers two options to mentor depending on an individual's availability and interest.

MENTORING OPTIONS 


Option 1 – One-on-one Experience

Mentors are matched with a student based on the student’s career choice, academic and/or personal interests. This experience is a formal professional commitment between a mentor and a student. The purpose of this relationship is to aid in the student’s academic and professional success throughout their collegiate journey.  Mentors and mentees are asked to meet at least once in person and correspond (via email, text, social/professional media) at least another four times each semester. 

Option 2 – Group Experience

Mentors will host a session with a group of students who have selected a major or have an interest in a career similar to that of the mentors. This experience is an informal professional commitment between mentors and groups of students. The purpose of this option is to expose students to various career and professional opportunities and to provide information sharing, advice, social support, coaching, counseling and empowering individuals to greater competency. Unlike the one-on-one experience, mentee groups may change from session to session.

  

MENTOR VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION


Objectives

  • Help students develop meaningful, ethical, professional and civic relationships
  • Help students learn what skills and academic preparations are required for various career opportunities
  • Help enhance student’s ability to interact comfortably and productively with people/groups from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Assist students in developing appropriate interpersonal, goal setting and effective life skills

Qualifications

  • A desire to work with and be accessible to the mentee
  • Compassionate, open and patient
  • Willingness to listen
  • Ability to set limits (One-on-One Experience)
  • Ability to travel to and from campus and community activities

  • Mentors are part of a network of support that a young person can consistently turn to for the kind of big and small life lessons that you don't learn in a classroom
  • By sharing their on life experiences, mentors provide students with a clear vision of what their future could look like

MENTOR WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

Mentors are asked to attend a brief training session in the summer to prepare for the mentoring. This training prepares the mentor to focus on significant issues of mentoring a student in an academic and professional setting. The training will also explain in further detail the two mentoring options available: One-on-One Experience and Group Experience. ONLINE MENTOR TRAINING

The CLIMB Mentoring Program has an online training resource for those just entering the program and were unable to attend the Summer 2016 Training Event. The Online Mentor Training page has all of the resources discussed at the workshop including a video recording from that evening.  In addition, you will find an orientation form to fill out and submit once you have gone through the presentation and materials.
