(COLUMBIA, SC) The Columbia College Department of Music will present pianist Michael James and vocalist Mimi Meyer in concert on Monday, October 3, 7:30 p.m., in the Concert Hall of Spears Music/Art Center. The event is free and open to the public.
The program will include works such as "Embraceable You" by Ira and George Gershwin, "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" by Eric Maschwitz and Manning Sherwin, "The Nearness of You" by Ned Washington and Hoagy Carmichael, "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, and an art song medley on which James and his wife Nancy collaborated.
James, who holds a doctor of musical arts degree in piano pedagogy from the University of South Carolina, has been a professional pianist for over 40 years. He has served as a dance musician for classes and concerts at colleges, universities, and schools of dance across the state, including the S.C. Governor's School and, currently, the University of S.C. Department of Theatre and Dance.
Meyer, who began singing at age five, has performed in a variety of settings, from solo concerts to church choirs to restaurant entertainment. A counselor with Lexington County Community Mental Health, she also serves as a spiritual coach with Life Garden.
Columbia College, founded in 1854 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is a private, liberal arts, women's college with a coeducational Evening College and Graduate School.
