Goodall Gallery, Columbia College
February 18–March 18, 2008*
Gallery talk and reception: Thursday, February 28, 12:30–1:15 p.m.

The Goodall Gallery at Columbia College will present a one woman show by Greenville based artist, Jo Carol Mitchell-Rogers, entitled Ordinary Icons.  The exhibition will feature paintings she created during a 2006 spring sabbatical.  The exhibit opens February 18 and continues through March 18, 2008, with an artist’s gallery talk and reception on Thursday, February 28, from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

Mitchell-Rogers is a professor of art and currently serves as chair of the art department at Anderson University where she has been teaching for the past 19 years.  A sabbatical during the spring semester of 2006 sparked a new body of work entitled Ordinary Icons.  The work is inspired by her “interest in the notion of the iconography of the ordinary,” says Jo Carol, to “transform seemingly common or everyday moments that might otherwise be overlooked.”  Each of the 6”x6” acrylic on masonite paintings, derived from original photographs, are sized to create a level of intimacy with “commonly encountered objects taken out of context” says Jo Carol. Some of the images are “intentionally playful and quirky,” she says, “whereas others elicit a more contemplative feeling or sense of nostalgia.”

She is a member of the ArtBomb Company in Greenville and her work has been included in over 35 invitational exhibitions as well as over 20 national, regional, and state shows with upcoming shows at Converse College, ArtBomb Studios, and Anderson University.

The Columbia College Goodall Gallery is located in the Spears Music/Art Center in downtown Columbia, 1301 Columbia College Drive (off North Main).  Gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  For further information about exhibits, please contact Jackie Adams at 803-786-3088.
