On Monday, March 8, at Carver Lyon Elementary School, the C.A. Johnson Teacher Cadet class, taught by Dr. Sonja Hawkins, hosted a reading event for all of the kindergarten students. Dr. Tracy West, Columbia College Teacher Cadet liaison and Marcella Wine-Snyder, Pre-Collegiate Program Director of the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) were the guest readers. At the conclusion, the four C.A. Johnson Teacher Cadets presented each student with a copy of Where the Wild Things Are donated by the Rolling Readers, a volunteer organization dedicated to developing a lifelong love of reading. Carver Lyon Elementary is in Richland School District One.
C.A. Johnson Teacher Cadets have been reading with Carver Lyon students this semester as part of their curriculum. The Teacher Cadet Program is an innovative approach designed to attract talented young people to the teaching profession through a challenging introduction to the field. The program seeks to provide high school students insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America's schools. Columbia College currently partners with three Teacher Cadet programs: C.A. Johnson, and Camden High School and Swansea High School.
