Bridging the Gap: Young Alum & C2 Student Service Day
On Saturday, June 26, 2010, a group of Columbia College students, alumnae, and staff, ranging from the classes of 1991 to 2013, gathered by the stairs of Breed Leadership Center for a day of service.
The dedicated Koalas spent the day weeding flower beds on campus and organizing donations for the Columbia College Free Store. The Columbia College Free Store is stocked by donations from the campus community and is opened at least once a month to students to shop, free of charge, for items they need.
A collaborative effort by Alumnae Relations and the Center for Engaged Learning, the Young Alum & C2 Student Service Day was designed to bring together Columbia College students and alumnae and promote the Columbia College spirit of philanthropy and service throughout the campus, the College’s network, and in the Columbia community.
The Service Day was managed in part by Kiosha Gregg, a 2010 Columbia College graduate, working in the Center for Engaged Learning as an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate provided through South Carolina Campus Compact.
The SCCC is part of the National Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement, and service-learning in higher education. Columbia College has been a member since 2009.
Future service days will be organized in conjunction with CC Serves and may include projects with the Harvest Hope Food Bank, The Animal Mission, Red Cross, the Ronald McDonald House, PETS INC., Homeworks, Agape Senior, Sistercare, and The Women’s Shelter.
