This September, sixteen of the finest actors, directors, designers and technicians from the University of Cambridge are taking Shakespeare’s final masterpiece, THE TEMPEST, 3,500 miles across the Atlantic to perform to American audiences.
“I chose THE TEMPEST, as I knew that an arresting and brave interpretation of a Shakespeare classic could win over both an American and English audience, as much for its theatrical versatility as for being a musical and vibrant production.” – Mark Maughan, Director
THE TEMPEST tells the story of the deposed Duke of Milan, Prospero, who summons up a storm to shipwreck his usurpers on his island. We are drawn into a world of young love ignited at a glance, bruised egos and damaged pride, a promised liberation soon to be betrayed, and the end of a private empire.
Founded in 2000 and endorsed by hugely successful Cambridge alumnus, Stephen Fry, CAST is proud to be celebrating its 10th tour with an exciting and expansive 4000 mile route, performing in fifteen different venues across the United States. The 2010 tour is the biggest in the company’s history. As the 10th CAST production, THE TEMPEST looks certain to be the best offering yet.
This will be CAST’s second visit to Columbia College during their annual tour of eastern states. In 2009 they brought Two Gentlemen of Verona to Cottingham Theatre for a delightful performance.
“These thespians hailing from the land of Shakespeare delivered a remarkable intensity and professionalism. –MIT “The Tech”
“Cambridge student theatre…has an unequaled health, freshness and dynamism. I’m sure it will be a triumph.” –Stephen Fry
