Dr. Monika Alston Miller is a native of Columbia, South Carolina, who joined our faculty in 2017. Prior to her position at Columbia College, she was a faculty member at the University of Central Arkansas where she was honored with two of UCA’s three highest awards for faculty, the UCA Teaching Excellence Award and the UCA Public Service Award.
Her educational background is in the study of rhetoric and public address. Dr. Alston Miller earned her BA in Rhetoric and Communication Studies from the University of Richmond, which grew in her a love for liberal arts education. She went on to earn an MA in Speech Communication and a PhD in Communication Arts and Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University. During her graduate studies, she developed a passion for teaching public speaking and has since taught courses across the communication discipline including nonverbal communication, political communication, rhetorical theory, hip hop studies, and more.
At Columbia College, Dr. Alston Miller serves as the Class of 2022 advisor and is involved in a number of campus committees. Outside of the classroom, her interests include participating activities related to women’s health and wellness, raising infant mortality awareness, writing, painting, and trying new foods.
